Vibe aims to serve as an alternative to the human ear, listening for indicative background sounds in order to assist users in a variety of situations.
As Israelis, we are all familiar with the red-alert siren. The second we hear the high pitch, our bodies automatically react, moving as quickly as possible to a safe shelter. Have you ever thought about how the hearing-impaired community deals with this situation? What about something simpler, like the doorbell? VIBE has the solution.
When we began working together as a team, it was clear to all of us that we want to use this platform and our project to impact a community in need. During one of our brainstorming sessions, we all received push notifications on our cellphones alerting us of a red alert siren in the South of Israel. That is when we began asking ourselves- what do people with impaired-hearing do in this situation? Are they reliant upon family and friends? What solutions are in the market for this community? We began looking for answers, yet we couldn’t find any that we were satisfied with. That is how our idea came to life.
The Vibe app works constantly in the background of any smartphone, “listening” to sounds in the area. Upon recognizing a familiar tone, the app will automatically alert the user. Vibe will work on identifying only indicative sounds, which are predefined by the user based on his needs and preferences.
When we asked 49 hearing-impaired individuals what they thought about market solutions, 60% of them said they aren’t satisfying- they cost money (sometimes, a lot of it), require installment and provide very specific solutions. A lot of the times they don’t work effectively. Vibe requires one thing only- a smartphone. The app is modular and easy to use, meaning the user can input sounds that they would like the app to notify them about (the microwave, a siren, the doorbell, etc).
The app constantly listens for background sounds
The app recognizes a pre-defined indicative sound
The app notifies the user using push notification
The technology behind Vibe in and of itself is complex. One of our greatest challenges is to guarantee that every sound will be recognized and communicated to the user on time and without fail.
Vibe has the potential to create life-changing impacts on the daily lives of those living with hearing impairment. In fact, the study we held shows that 85% believe that Vibe could transform their day to day lives.
We believe our product can provide users with the peace of mind and confidence they need and deserve.
